About GreatHealthGear
GreatHealthGear publishes in-depth research across the full landscape of recovery and health technology — sleep trackers, smart scales, massage guns, red light therapy, cold and heat therapy, recovery boots, EMS and TENS devices, and breathwork tools. Every verdict here is built from aggregated evidence, not a single reviewer's fortnight with a device.
What GreatHealthGear does
Consumer health tech is a crowded market with a lot of noise — flashy unboxing videos, manufacturer-sponsored reviews, and short-term impressions dressed up as conclusions. GreatHealthGear exists to cut through that.
We aggregate peer-reviewed accuracy studies, independent validation research, long-term user data, and expert reviews from across the web. We read the clinical literature on sleep staging algorithms, the engineering teardowns, and the one-year-in user reports that reveal what a device is actually like to live with. Then we synthesise it into structured, honest assessments with scores that reflect the weight of that evidence.
We do not conduct our own hands-on device testing. We do not receive devices for free from manufacturers. Our conclusions are built entirely from publicly available data and published research. That makes them slower to form — and harder to distort.
How we score products
Every product review on GreatHealthGear is scored across seven fixed categories, each rated 1–5. The overall score (out of 10) is calculated automatically — it is never set by hand.
The seven categories aren't identical for every product type — a sleep tracker is scored on Tracking Accuracy and Battery Life, while a massage gun is scored on Power & Performance and Noise Level. Two categories are constant everywhere: Design & Build Quality and Subscription & Pricing (or Value for Money). Where a product has a companion app, App & Software always includes a section on data privacy. The exact list for any category is shown on that category's hub page. See How We Research & Review for the full methodology.
Score scale
- 5 — Best in class. No meaningful weaknesses in this area.
- 4 — Very good. Minor weaknesses that don't materially affect experience.
- 3 — Acceptable. Noticeable weaknesses some users will care about.
- 2 — Below expectations. Significant weaknesses.
- 1 — Poor. A real reason to consider alternatives.
Sources we draw on
Where clinical accuracy is relevant — sleep trackers and smart scales, for example — claims are grounded in peer-reviewed research comparing consumer devices against validated benchmarks such as polysomnography (PSG) or DEXA scanning. We cite sources by author and publication, not vague references to "studies show."
For other product categories, we draw on independent lab testing of manufacturer-stated specifications, investigative journalism, and long-term user data from verified purchasers. Where the evidence is mixed or incomplete, we say so plainly rather than presenting false certainty.
Affiliate disclosure
GreatHealthGear participates in affiliate marketing programmes. When you click a link to a retailer and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission. This costs you nothing extra.
Affiliate relationships never influence editorial judgement. Products are evaluated on their merits. If a product scores poorly, we say so — regardless of whether it pays a commission. The affiliate model funds the site and keeps it free to use; it does not buy favourable coverage.
