What Beginners Actually Need
Sufficient stall force to learn on. Beginners often apply too much pressure before developing technique. At 20–30 lbs stall force, the motor stalls before the user has learned that their pressure is excessive — creating frustrating experiences. At 40–60 lbs, the device handles beginner pressure levels and teaches the user what effective percussion feels like without stalling.
Guided routines help, but are not essential. App-guided routines from Therabody and Hyperice are genuinely useful for directing beginners to the right muscle groups, speeds, and durations. But experienced manual therapy users — physiotherapists, sports massage recipients, or anyone with a good body map — can use the Ekrin B37 effectively without digital guidance.
Start with a mid-range device. The single most common beginner mistake is either underspending (a $65 budget device that stalls on large muscles, discouraging continued use) or overspending (a $649 flagship with features the beginner will never use). $130–$249 gives you everything you need to discover whether percussive therapy works for your body.
