Red Flags to Avoid

**Avoid any device that:** - Lists total wattage as the primary performance metric (watts ≠ irradiance) - Does not publish third-party spectroradiometer irradiance data - Claims medical treatment efficacy beyond what the evidence supports - Does not have a meaningful warranty (1+ years minimum) - Has no verifiable company history

The Irradiance Verification Test

Before purchasing any device:

  1. Find the manufacturer’s irradiance claim (mW/cm² at specified distance)
  2. Search for independent reviews that include measured irradiance (Outliyr, GembaRed, specific YouTube reviewers who use light meters)
  3. Compare the measured irradiance to the claim — if measured is 50%+ below claimed, the device is misrepresenting its output
  4. Check whether the brand distinguishes between red irradiance and NIR irradiance separately (combined figures may obscure that one wavelength is much weaker)

Brands that publish detailed third-party verification data — PlatinumLED, Joovv, Omnilux — pass this test by definition. For less-established brands, the research burden is on the buyer.

Energy Dose Check

Once you have a verified irradiance figure, calculate whether a standard 10-minute session falls within published research dose ranges (4–60 J/cm² for most applications):

J/cm² = Irradiance (mW/cm²) × 600 seconds / 1000

  • 50 mW/cm² × 600 / 1000 = 30 J/cm² (within research range)
  • 100 mW/cm² × 600 / 1000 = 60 J/cm² (at the upper end of typical research range)
  • 200 mW/cm² × 600 / 1000 = 120 J/cm² (above most published research doses — reduce session time)

If your device’s verified irradiance is very low (e.g., 20 mW/cm²), achieving a 30 J/cm² dose requires 25+ minutes — which may be impractical for daily use.

Bottom Line

The right device is one with: verified irradiance, accurate wavelengths, coverage that matches your treatment area, and a brand with a meaningful track record. On that framework, PlatinumLED BioMax 600 is the best default recommendation for most buyers. For face-specific treatment, Omnilux Contour Face. For the best full-body value, Mito MitoPRO 1500.
